Garrett Alberson visits Dome at America's Center for Gateway Dirt Nationals
Garrett Alberson took the Roberts Motorsports No. 58 Late Model into battle on Friday afternoon as his preliminary night got underway at the Dome at America’s Center (St. Louis, Mo.) for the sixth annual Gateway Dirt Nationals.
With the 119-car field split into two groups on Thursday and Friday, Alberson timed in second-fastest in his group on Friday before placing first in his heat. Earning the pole for his $5,000-to-win preliminary feature, Garrett attempted to nose ahead of Cody Bauer for the lead several times but was never able to sneak past on the cushion. With a late race caution on lap 21 realigning the field, Alberson got sandwiched in between the backstretch wall and another competitor while challenging for the lead that dropped him to 15th.
Rebounding with a fourth-to-second run in his qualifier on Saturday after his crew swapped out the car’s rear-end, Garrett locked into the 18th-starting position for the Gateway Dirt Nationals finale. With $30,000 on the line, Alberson was an early retiree from the 40-lapper on the fifth circuit.
